A question for compound sentence

Hi Katie, I'm George. I got confused about compound sentences. What are the differents between simple sentences and compound sentences?
I searched from internet and got a web which explains that compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses (or simple sentences) joined by coordinating conjunctions like "and", "but", and "or." If the statement is true, is the example sentence,"Tom and Mary went to the store", given in the class a compound sentence? I think that "Tom and Mary went to the store" is a simple sentence, not a compound sentence. Because the conjunction, "and", is connect Tom and Mary. However, Tom or Mary is not a independent clauses or a simple sentence.
Could you please tell me why "Tom and Mary went to the store" is a compound sentence ? Thank you.

Good question George! I have clarified this in class today. Rule 1 given on the handout is related to a compound setence(more than one SV structures). However, Rule 2 is related to a simple sentence (only one SV structure). We will do more practise in class next week.
